Unconventional Love Story Creates Buzz in Memphis
Jacksonville, NC – October 25, 2007 – In the same city that Dr. Martin Luther King was
assassinated and Elvis Presley claimed as his home, a new star is emerging. First-time
author Latrivia S. Nelson is promoting her book, Ivy’s Twisted Vine. While there have been
hundreds of books to emerge from Memphis, this book promises a more clever look at a
few of the city’s most taboo subjects: interracial dating, unplanned pregnancy and dirty
politics.
“I wanted to write a book that focused less on skin color and more on the character of a
person, much like the great Dr. King would have wanted,” states Nelson. On the contrary,
this author does not give a conventional platform for interracial dating to be discussed.
Ivy's Twisted Vine is a steamy romance that embodies extremely unconventional
relationships between young adults. However, Nelson is convinced that these issues will be
welcomed by the public and understood by the readers.
This book comes in the wake of an extremely convenient time. As Memphis embraces its
African-American mayor, Willie Herenton for his eighth term in office, former Congressman
Harold Ford, Jr. announces his engagement to his Caucasian girlfriend and the Memphis
Police Department gears up to fight the city's title as the nation’s leader in violent crime,
spectators wonder if the book has any possible non-fiction roots.
“This book is truly a work of fiction and is based on the general whirlwind surrounding the
city. While Ivy’s Twisted Vine is meant to create intrigue, there is absolutely no connection
to this book and any one specific person," states Nelson.
However, there is room to wonder. Nelson and her main character, Ivy, both graduated
from the only HBCU in Memphis, pledged to a sorority and were both college queens, but
Nelson assures us that it's purely coincidental and helps create more realistic characters.
Ivy's Twisted Vine is about a college queen (Ivy Winters) who is dumped by her fiancé (Grey
Henderson) while planning their wedding and finishing her final year of college. In an effort
to get over the breakup, she falls for an Italian cop heading a specialized unit formed by the
mayor designed to take down the city's biggest drug dealer. However, the mayor's son,
Grey Henderson wants her back to help his image as he runs for his uncle's seat in the U.S.
House of Representatives in the next term. When Ivy and Grey reconcile, they discover that
Ivy is pregnant, but the question is by whom? All three people have to suffer through a crazy
nine-month pregnancy before they discover the results of the paternity test. And Ivy has to
decide if she wants the love of her life or the man of her dreams.
Ivy’s Twisted Vine will be available to order from Latrivia Nelson’s web site at www.
latrivianelson.com and will be in select bookstores February 2008. Free media review
copies will be available upon request.
Latrivia S. Nelson is a professional fund raiser and native Memphian with many years
experience working with numerous nonprofits nationwide. She says she was inspired to
write her novel after realizing that the platform for discussion on interracial dating in
Memphis was still so tense after many years of continual efforts to create meaningful
dialogue.
